New research brings better wireless to remote locations, 80 percent faster GoT downloads

Image

Not getting the bandwidth you need, Heidi? Then maybe the folks at North Carolina State University can help. They've figured out a way to boost multi-hop networks, where data is forwarded across two or more nodes (hops) in order to reach far-flung users. Networks like this can often get bogged down by interference between neighboring nodes. But by using algorithms to automatically modulate the power of each link, the NC State scientists have managed to jump efficiency by up to 80 percent. This has the effect of not only increasing speed, but also saving juice if the systems are battery powered -- like those used by the US Army, which sponsored the research. After all, just because you're away from the throne doesn't mean you have to be out of the game.

New research brings better wireless to remote locations, 80 percent faster GoT downloads originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 03:34:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Avila's homer gives Tigers 13-12 win over Red Sox

DETROIT (AP) ? Alex Avila's drive sailed to deep right field, barely clearing both an outfielder and a wall.

An exhilarating opening series at Comerica Park was finally over, and the Detroit catcher could look forward to some much-needed rest.

"I'm too tired right now," Avila said. "I'm glad we have an off day (Monday). This weekend has been crazy."

Avila's two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Tigers a stunning 13-12 victory over Boston on Sunday, leaving the Red Sox winless in three games under new manager Bobby Valentine.

Detroit swept the season-opening series, scoring 26 runs and winning twice in its final at-bat.

The Tigers trailed 10-7 on Sunday when Miguel Cabrera tied the game with a three-run shot off Alfredo Aceves in the ninth. Boston then scored twice in the 11th, but Mark Melancon (0-2) couldn't hold the lead.

Cabrera and Prince Fielder singled with one out before a wild pitch sent Cabrera to third and Delmon Young's sacrifice fly cut the margin in half. Avila followed with a drive to right and Cody Ross tried to make a leaping catch, but the ball appeared to hit a restraining gate just above the wall before caroming back onto the field.

Avila paused near second before being waved around the bases by the umpires. The play was not reviewed. Valentine said he asked and was assured by umpires that the ball had clearly hit the railing above the fence.

"You don't see those kinds of games at this level very often," Avila said. "There's really no rhyme or reason or explanation for it."

It's certainly rare for the Red Sox: They lost for the first time when scoring 12 runs or more since a 22-13 loss to the Chicago White Sox on May 31, 1970, according to STATS LLC.

Duane Below (2-0) got one out for the win ? even though Detroit manager Jim Leyland said he wouldn't be available ? in a game that lasted 4 hours, 45 minutes. Cabrera had five RBIs.

The Red Sox and New York Yankees are both off to 0-3 starts ? the first time that's happened since 1966, according to STATS LLC.

Boston is without newly acquired closer Andrew Bailey, who had surgery on his right thumb. Melancon and Aceves are the primary candidates to close in Bailey's absence, and both blew saves on Sunday.

"This is a work in progress," Valentine said. "We're three days in after losing our closer, and we're still trying to figure it out."

Nick Punto and Dustin Pedroia hit RBI singles in the 11th to give Boston the lead, but it didn't hold up. Adrian Gonzalez homered earlier for the Red Sox.

"Our guys played a hell of a game," Valentine said. "We had a walk-off loss on opening day, then got beat 10-0 and were down 4-0 in the first inning today ? but we fought back and took them 11 innings."

Detroit beat the Red Sox 3-2 in Thursday's opener on a ninth-inning hit by Austin Jackson, then cruised to a blowout Saturday. The Tigers seemed on their way to another easy win when Jhonny Peralta's three-run double in the first inning gave them a 4-0 lead, but starter Max Scherzer couldn't hold it.

Scherzer allowed seven runs on eight hits in 2 2-3 innings, but Boston's Clay Buchholz wasn't much better. He allowed seven runs on eight hits in four innings in what was his first start since June because of a stress fracture in his back.

Buchholz had gone 42 consecutive starts since the beginning of 2010 without allowing more than five earned runs.

Detroit reliever Daniel Schlereth allowed a two-run homer to Gonzalez on the first pitch he threw after coming on in the sixth. That gave Boston a 9-7 lead, and Vicente Padilla pitched four scoreless innings of relief for the Red Sox after replacing Buchholz.

The 34-year-old Padilla kept the powerful Detroit lineup off balance, at one point lobbing consecutive pitches of 54 and 52 mph on the stadium gun to Fielder in the seventh.

Punto made it 10-7 with an RBI infield single in the ninth, but Jackson and Brennan Boesch led off the bottom of the inning with singles, and Cabrera tied it.

"We've got to get this straight: It's not about Prince and me," Cabrera said. "We've got 25 guys, it's about the Detroit Tigers, it's about everybody here. We feel comfortable about everybody here so let's play ball and play hard."

NOTES: The Tigers placed RHP Doug Fister (strained left side) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled RHP Brayan Villarreal from Triple-A Toledo, moves they announced after Saturday's game. ... Valentine went out onto the field after Gonzalez was hit by a pitch from Phil Coke in the eighth. The umpires then warned both benches, which appeared to annoy the Boston manager even more.

Total's North Sea leak draws comparisons with BP

(AP) ? Oil giant Total has moved to reassure investors and environmental activists over the past week that the financial and environmental damage from its gas leak in the North Sea would be limited, a task made more difficult by comparisons to BP's handling of a catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico nearly two years ago.

Initial data showed that the leak from Total's platform in the Elgin gas field 150 miles (250 kilometers) off the coast of Scotland ? which was first detected March 25 ? was pouring out about 7 million cubic feet (200,000 cubic meters) of natural gas each day. On Friday, the company said the rate of the leak appeared to have slowed but had no new figure.

In a conference call to analysts and reporters last week, Total Chief Financial Officer Patrick de La Chevardiere appealed to those listening to avoid comparisons between the Elgin leak and the Gulf spill at BP's Macondo well.

"While we understand that comparisons to Macondo are inevitable, we would like to state clearly that the situations are very different," he said. "There is no crude oil involved here and therefore the current impact on and risks for the environment are relatively low."

The Elgin leak is also on a smaller scale, according to George Hirasaki, a chemical engineering professor at Rice University in Texas who has worked in the oil industry. "It's more of a very dangerous situation rather than a disaster so they may be able to get it back under control with minimal losses," he said.

Total moved to dispel fears of an explosion or any long-lasting environmental damage, saying that gas is dissipating quickly. A spokesman for the company said Thursday that about 40 cubic feet (1.2 cubic meters) of gas condensate remains in the water. He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing policy.

Environmental activist group Greenpeace, however, has sent a boat to the area to take air and water samples. It said its tests would reveal in the coming days whether it considers whether the leak will cause damage to the environment or wildlife in the area. In the meantime, the group did note that the gas escaping is mostly methane, which is "20 times more dangerous for the climate than CO2 (carbon dioxide)."

During the Gulf spill, roughly 200 million gallons (780 million liters) of oil spewed from the blown-out well. The spill affected sensitive tidal estuaries and beaches, killed wildlife and closed vast areas of the Gulf to commercial fishing for months.

The disaster cost BP chief executive Tony Hayward his job after a series of public relations gaffes and derailed the company's attempt to create an environmentally friendly image. BP has been hit with several lawsuits, which will likely cost it tens of billions of dollars to resolve.

To pay for the cleanup and claims, BP was forced to cut its dividend, borrow money and sell off tens of billions of dollars in assets. The company's share price is still some 30 percent below its 6.55 pound ($10.39) close before the spill on April 20, 2010.

Total, however, is so confident that the leak will have minimal environmental impact that de La Chevardiere spent most of a recent call with analysts and journalists discussing the financial consequences. Those, too, he said, are manageable.

Still, it's unclear how quickly Total will be able to stop the leak. It is currently trying to get a team back on the platform to attempt to plug the leak by pumping in mud. On Thursday, a handful of experts landed on the platform for a few hours to gather data on the leak and figure out if it was safe to begin trying to plug it.

Total is also preparing to drill relief wells, in case that first method doesn't work.

Drilling relief wells is an expensive and a fairly long process. When asked whether an estimate of six months was reasonable on the analyst call, Michel Hourcard, the director of development for Total's exploration and production arm, said it was.

Currently, the cost of the response is around $1 million per day, said de La Chevardiere. If relief wells are needed, the costs will rise to $1.5 million per day, while they're being drilled.

Added to those costs is the loss of production. The current impact on the company's net operating income is about $1.5 million per day, he said. That's a small fraction of the $16 billion in net operating income the company reported last year, and ratings agencies have indicated they are not concerned.

It's also nowhere near the around $40 billion BP has estimated the 85-day Gulf spill cost them, including response and compensation. Those costs are in flux because not all litigation has been resolved.

"Even in the event of the shutdown of the whole Elgin field, Fitch believes Total is likely to retain its 'AA' credit rating as it has the cash resources to more than cover any associated costs," Fitch said in a statement a few days into the leak. "These sorts of accidents are often difficult to resolve and unpredictable; nonetheless, in our view the potential is low for this leak to escalate to a crisis on the scale of Deepwater Horizon."

But, as de La Chevardiere noted, the comparisons are almost irresistible.

"The comparison (with the Gulf spill) now is wholly unavoidable, just as for BP and the Deepwater Horizon spill, the comparison with Exxon Valdez was unavoidable," said Gene Grabowski, a senior vice president with Levick Strategic Communications, which advises clients on communicating in a crisis. "We have a new standard by which all leaks will be measured."

But that doesn't mean that the mere invocation of BP sullies Total's reputation. Grabowski said that if the environmental damage is limited, then he expected the long-term impact of the spill to be fairly muted.

Eric Smith, the associate director of the Energy Institute at Tulane University in Louisiana, said the company appeared to have learned one lesson from BP: that less information is better. He pointed to the fact that industry experts had expected most of the ways BP tried to plug its leak would fail; that's simply how disaster-response works. You try everything, and all you need is one solution.

"The problem with too much transparency when you're in the middle of a situation like that is you know there are going to be failures," he said. "The one lesson everybody learned (from the Gulf spill) is to turn the TV cameras off."

In the Gulf, an underwater camera showed oil gushing out of the well in real time. Media tracked the spread of a slick that took days to reach shore. And photos of sea birds covered in oil drove home the damage.

By contrast, photos of the Total rig initially showed a small flame. That raised concern of an explosion but has since gone out, and now the rig looks fairly normal, at least to layman's eyes.

"As long as they don't make any ridiculous statement, they're going to benefit from the fact that there are no good pictures for this and that the environmental impact is unclear and that the constant glare of the U.S. media is not on this," Grabowski said.

Finding Your Balance from A to Chi: Long Distance Relationships in ...

College is supposed to be the best four years of your life, so why not love every minute of it?

Especially entering college, deciding to continue a high school relationship is not always an easy one. While part of you may want to hold onto your significant other, there?s always the fear of missing the opportunity to meet someone else. Since you are entering a new phase in your life, your changing perspective and events in college may begin to separate the two of you. But if you do want to maintain this relationship, you have to learn to make a long distance relationship work. This isn?t impossible; you just have to know its what you want.

As you enter this new chapter of your life, everything begins to change. In order to successfully maintain a long distance relationship in college, the two of you have to have open communication. Even though being in constant communication with one another may no longer be a viable option, set up a definitive time once a week to talk. Whether it?s through Skype or a phone call, being able to sit down once a week to catch each other up on your week is crucial. Allowing your boyfriend or girlfriend to be part of your new life will help you strike the balance between home and school life.

The number one thing to remember about maintaining a long distance relationship is honesty: being open with your partner and remaining true to yourself. If there are moments of doubt, express them. You never want to feel trapped, or left with the burning feelings of a diminishing relationship. Sometimes you may need to step back and reevaluate the situation, understanding you have to make the decision that?s best for you. You both deserve to be happy; so don?t let the past hold you back from discovering something you may be missing.

Long distance relationships are never easy, but learning to make them work is key. By being honest to yourself and to your partner, this transition will become easier. While at times things may become difficult, your overall respect and love for each other will help you overcome any obstacle you may face.

French Socialist's big idea: tax the rich

(AP) ? French presidential candidate Francois Hollande, leading in polls but lacking in ideas that stick in voters' minds, finally dropped a bombshell: As president, he would levy a 75 percent tax on anyone who makes more than ?1 million ($1.33 million) a year.

The flashy idea from the normally bland Socialist proved wildly popular, fanning hostility toward executive salaries and forcing President Nicolas Sarkozy to defend his ostentatious friendships with the rich. It also unleashed debate in the French press about whether the wealthy would decamp for gentler tax pastures.

As much as France likes the plan, it does not seem to have assured Hollande's victory, which, just three weeks before the first round of voting, is growing more uncertain as Sarkozy reaps the benefits of projecting presidential mettle following France's shooting attacks.

Polls put the two men neck-and-neck in the first round April 22, and show Sarkozy gaining on Hollande for the decisive runoff May 6.

Centrist candidate Francois Bayrou has dismissed the plan as absurd ? contending that when all was added up, the top bracket would be taxed at nearly 100 percent. Many economists are also scratching their heads over the tax ? seeing it as dangerous at worst and ineffective at best ? and even Hollande admits it's not meant to balance the budget.

Still, the "Fouquet's tax" ? so named by some in the press after the tony restaurant where Sarkozy celebrated his 2007 presidential win ? is riding and in part fueling a resurgence of the French left. The tax-the-rich proposal has garnered as much as 65 percent approval in some polls.

All that has helped Hollande, often perceived as amiable but uninspiring, to distinguish himself from his main opponent, said Jean-Daniel Levy, a pollster and political analyst.

"Nicolas Sarkozy has a double difficulty: On the one hand, he is perceived as a president who is close to the rich, which is not a good sign in France. And he is also seen as a president who oversaw inegalitarian policies," he said. The tax, he added, "allows Francois Hollande to take control again and to paint a negative portrait of Nicolas Sarkozy."

But there is a danger that Hollande hit the nerve too well.

Many voters have swept right past Hollande and into the camp of far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, who has electrified voters with calls for a new French revolution and who some polls say will come in third or fourth in the first round of elections. That could bleed support away from Hollande in the first round, depriving him of crucial momentum going into the second one.

Antipathy for the rich is widespread in France, where wealth is meant to be discreet and climbing the social ladder to build yourself a mansion isn't a common narrative.

Hollande himself once famously declared "I do not like the rich" ? a statement that only boosted his political standing among those who think wealth should be redistributed instead of accumulated.

Following his 75-percent tax announcement, front pages treated the rich like some strange, migrating species, declaring that they would decamp to Belgium if the tax was put in place. One presidential candidate, Dominique de Villepin, himself quite wealthy, warned France not to "kill the goose that lays the golden eggs."

While there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest the wealthy are eyeing the border, tax lawyer Sandra Hazan said there's nothing new in rich people fleeing France. But they don't pull up the stakes simply because taxes are high.

"The problem is not the level of taxation you suffer," said Hazan, who heads the tax department at law firm Salans. "The problem is when you cannot anticipate how much you will be paying."

The French tax code has long been unpredictable, she said, but it has become even more so in recent months. As Sarkozy's administration has tried to keep a series of budget targets that are central to his credibility and reassure markets that France can manage its debt, the number of changes to tax law have come fast and furious.

When he put taxes at the center of his campaign, Hollande unleashed a new flood of tax proposals, creating more uncertainty. Sarkozy, too, has vowed to hunt down French people who have fled the country purely to escape high taxes and make them pay the difference between what they're paying in their haven and what they would have to pay in France.

In all the discussion about how much the rich make and how much they should pay, Sarkozy has also been put on the spot ? again ? about a lavish party to celebrate his presidential victory at Fouquet's and a vacation on a friend's yacht he took shortly after. These moves quickly earned him the moniker "President Bling Bling," and he has struggled ever since to shed the image of a man too comfortable with money.

Five years after the victory party and the yacht trip, Sarkozy is still fielding questions about them. He most recently defended the vacation in an interview not long after Hollande's proposal when he called it a last-ditch attempt to save his marriage to Cecilia, whom he divorced not long after taking office.

But Hollande has struggled to harness this momentum.

Hollande bungled the announcement of his new tax, initially saying it would apply to households bringing in more than ?1 million ? about $1.33 million ? a month, before clarifying he meant an individual's annual revenue.

He has also failed to provide a coherent narrative for why the tax is needed. He started out by saying that, in tough times, the rich had to pay their fair share, before later conceding it would only bring in about ?100 million to ?300 million each year. France's public debt is ?1.7 trillion ($2.3 trillion).

Then he said it would put pressure on companies to lower ballooning salaries, noting that that executive pay for France's 40 largest public companies ? the ones that make up its CAC-40 stock index ? rose 34 percent in 2010, while most of Europe was fighting for its very existence.

In the end, Hollande has settled on casting the tax as simply the right thing to do.

"It's not a question of return," he told RTL radio station. "It's a question of morality."

Pet Obesity Issues Prompts Weight-loss Competition among Pets ...

Obese Cat

Obese Cat

Millions of Americans face problems with their pet?s excess weight. Obesity can lead to?many other health-related issues among pets. Majority of dogs and cats in U.S. households are said to be obese or overweight. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, it has gotten worse just this past year. In their study, 53% of adult dogs and 55% of adult cats are classified as overweight or obese. The group?s founder, Ernie Ward, said that pets that are already overweight are ?still getting fatter?.

Obesity Triggers Health Issues

CNN received the annual study that around 41 million dogs and 47 million cats in America are overweight or obese. Among the many health issues stemming from obesity are arthritis, diabetes, cancers, and high blood pressure. According to Ward who is also a veterinarian, ?their life is shortened by two or 2 ? years.?

UK Holds Pet Weight Loss Contest

Across the globe, the UK is battling its own problems with pet obesity. To combat this problem, an annual contest is held by the UK veterinary charity, People?s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). PDSA provides care for sick and injured animals of the needy. The charity had their annual Pet Fit Club that included 18 finalists which were obese. These consisted of 11 dogs, 5 cats, and 2 rabbits. When weighed together, they reached 336 pounds in excess weight. The PDSA veterinarians will provide support in advising the pet owners on how to get their furry companions fit and trim with special diets and regular exercise programs.

Dee Doyle, the owner of a cat called Maverick who was one of the finalists, stated that since she took in her pet cat who was a stray two years ago, her pet?s weight as ballooned. The extra weight the cat has put on has affected its overall health. Maverick is practically sleeping all the time and has trouble breathing. Doyle was so shocked to hear her vet say that Maverick was the biggest cat he?s ever seen.

Fifi, another feline contestant, weighed 21 pounds, She was considered to be double her ideal body weight, to think that she was malnourished when she was found by her owner, Monica Bottomley. Bottomley has expressed her frustration in having failed in all her attempts in getting Fifi to lose weight.

The PDSA wants to enlighten pet owners on the problems that come with obesity in pets. The competition will run until September and the winner will get a grand prize which is a stay at a Four Seasons hotel amounting to $800, and one year?s worth of pet food.

Financial and retirement planning are both incredibly important, even for those who don?t think so. In fact, this is especially so for younger people. Retirement can seem like a very long way off, however it has a tendency to sneak up on people before they know it. A retirement planning Salt Lake City professional assists those looking for retirement investments.

Importance of Planning Early

They can help set up programs for you to invest in now to make certain your financial future is secure and safe. It?s never too early or too late to start developing a retirement planning Salt Lake City strategy while you are able to produce an income.

Investment Strategies
One of the most popular ways of planning for the future is investing in an employee 401(k) program. Many companies offer this and it?s a safe and easy way to invest money. Individual Retirement Accounts
Many people start their own IRA for retirement. An individual is allowed to contribute up to a certain amount each year. The same amount can also be contributed for a spouse as well. The money put into the IRA will not be taxed until you actually begin withdrawing. At this point, it?s taxed at the bracket you happen to fall under whenever starting the withdrawal process. However, it should be noted there are penalties for early withdrawal, so keep this in mind as part of your overall retirement planning Salt Lake City strategy.

Saving for Retirement
If you plan to save money for your retirement, it?s essential to have a realistic budget and then stick to it closely. If you have a strong salary or income, the basic rule of thumb is putting aside a certain percentage of your gross total toward this savings. As you become older, you want to increase this percentage. This is an effective and painless way to save money, and one day will pay dividends as you reach your retirement years.

Tips for Developing a Super HR Analytics Team

super brand fans 150x150 photo (talent analytics enterprise data analytics business intelligence advanced analytics )The growth of business intelligence (BI) over the last few years has propelled management in all facets of sales and marketing to realize the value that can be gained from the proper collection and analysis of data.

Research indicates that?top notch HR analytics teams?can help organizations cut costs, identify opportunities for improvement and achieve higher and quicker returns on investments.?Metrics derived from the business intelligence process help organizations understand customers as well as competitors, and are generally used to affect the bottom line.

Traditionally, the human resources department has not been viewed as part of a revenue center and the use of analytics has been extremely limited. That?s because, typically, the?HR department simply generates reports without providing insight or understanding. In other words, the reports are devoid of measurements, predictive models, scorecards, benchmark comparisons and key performance indicators (KPIs).

Today HR professionals must know how to collect, analyze, and interpret data from human capital metrics to be valuable to their companies as decision makers and influencers, according to Dawn Boyer?(@Dawn_Boyer), a small business human resources career consultant.

Boyer suggests HR analysts measure and analyze HR data to achieve better results?in the following six core areas:

  1. Recruiting
  2. Learning/development
  3. Performance
  4. Talent assessment
  5. Leadership planning/development
  6. Worker engagement and satisfaction

Assessing and evaluating the data to generate reliable recommendations to improve core processes require the skills of a super HR analytics team. The following tips will help you develop such a team:

  • Understand your organization. Is your organization ready to use the insight from the data, suggestions, and recommendations an HR analytics team will derive? Will your organization be able to set the goals as well as formulate and articulate a strategic plan that the HR analyst can help achieve?
  • Develop a plan for the HR analytics team. Define how the team will help your organization reach its goal. When building the team, know upfront if you need to start an initiative to acquire or build a new BI system or remodel an already existing system. Will the system be used to generate analytics? Will the team need to know how to develop dashboards and reports from the system or simply run reports?
  • Assess the analytical ability of the members of your current HR analytics team. Realize that you may need to augment the team.
  • Learn how to work well with all departments within the organization. Seek out C-level support and become accustomed to working with IT, finance, operations, etc. Keep all departments involved as you?ll be providing them with data and recommendations to help them make better HR decisions. Additionally, they?ll be providing your team with operational support. Gain credibility early ? start with easy-to-solve problems.
  • Work with your HR analytics team to understand the report development process. Ensure team members know how to share meaningful insights and recommendations.

New quantum encryption method foils hackers

ScienceDaily (Apr. 2, 2012) ? A research team led by University of Toronto Professor Hoi-Kwong Lo has found a new quantum encryption method to foil even the most sophisticated hackers. The discovery is outlined in the latest issue of Physical Review Letters.

Quantum cryptography is, in principle, a foolproof way to prevent hacking. It ensures that any attempt by an eavesdropper to read encoded communication data will lead to disturbances that can be detected by the legitimate users. Therefore, quantum cryptography allows the transmission of an unconditionally secure encryption key between two users, "Alice" and "Bob," in the presence of a potential hacker, "Eve." The encryption key is communicated using light signals and is received using photon detectors. The challenge is that Eve can intercept and manipulate these signals.

"Photon detectors have turned out to be an Achilles' heel for quantum key distribution (QKD), inadvertently opening the door to subtle side-channel attacks, most famously quantum hacking," wrote Dr. Charles Bennett, a research fellow at IBM and the co-inventor of quantum cryptography.

When quantum hacking occurs, light signals subvert the photon detectors, causing them to only see the photons that Eve wants Bob to see. Indeed, earlier research results by Professor Lo and independent work by Dr. Vadim Makarov of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology have shown how a clever quantum hacker can hack commercial QKD systems.

Now, Professor Lo and his team have come up with a simple solution to the untrusted device problem. Their method is called "Measurement Device Independent QKD." While Eve may operate the photon detectors and broadcast measurement results, Bob and Alice no longer have to trust those measurement results. Instead, Bob and Alice can simply verify Eve's honesty by measuring and comparing their own data. The aim is to detect subtle changes that occur when quantum data is manipulated by a third party.

Specifically, in Measurement Device Independent QKD, the two users send their signals to an untrusted relay -- "Charlie" -- who might possibly be controlled by Eve. Charlie performs a joint measurement on the signals, providing another point of comparison.

"A surprising feature is that Charlie's detectors can be arbitrarily flawed without compromising security," says Professor Lo. "This is because, provided that Alice and Bob's signal preparation processes are correct, they can verify whether Charlie or Eve is trustworthy through the correlations in their own data following any interaction with Charlie/Eve."

A proof-of-concept measurement has already been performed. Professor Lo and his team are now developing a prototype measurement device independent QKD system, which they expect will be ready within five years.

As a result of implementing this new method, quantum cryptography's Achilles' heel in the fight against hackers has been resolved. Perhaps, a quantum jump in data security has now been achieved.

obedience education for dogs and puppies

Obedience education is one of the greatest issues it is possible to do for your dog and your self. In reality, a nicely trained pet dog is certainly a happier dog! Why Due to the fact an educated puppy calls for a lot less limits, so the a lot more trustworthy the canine, the more flexibility he/she is given.

Dogs are social animals and without having correct education, theyll behave similar to animals.(A pet dog can be a pack bestial. It prefers to become with companions) They are able to soil your home, chew your belongings, bark at every little thing that moves, dig up your back garden, attack other dogs as well as strike you or your children! Training serves to reinforce the bond in between a canine and his owner. It builds communication and mutual respect, and successfully demonstrates for your dog that you are the leader in the pack without resorting to smacking or striking. Canines have their very own personalities and state of mind. They are able to be stubborn, dominant, submissive, or fearful, traits that will make them tough to own and prepare.

Obedience education can also be an straightforward strategy to set up the social hierarchy. Coaching may be accomplished at home, in an obedience course, or using a private trainer. Whenever your pet dog obeys a simple command he/she is showing compliance and respect to suit your needs. A well-behaved, obedient educated puppy is really a pleasure to personal simply because he can go practically anyplace with no becoming a threat or nuisance to others or by themselves ( an untrained pet dog loose close to traffic is an incident waiting around to occur). At the end in the day pet dog obedience training truly benefits everybody. Dont forget pet dog ownership is really a large responsibility and theres absolutely nothing quickly and easy about it, consistency is important in canine training, actually endurance, persistence and consistency are essentially the most important ideas in almost any type of teaching. Obedience training ought to be fun and satisfying for each you along with your canine.

When searching for a trainer or teacher to help with training your canine you will find different kinds of instruction offered, keep in mind an obedience instructor operates with individuals not canines, then the people perform with their pets. Whereas a puppy trainer teaches your dog to obey, then teaches you how you can get the puppy to listen to you.

Jennifer Lopez: Kinky with Casper Smart!

In a recent interview, Jennifer Lopez described boyfriend Casper Smart as a "good egg."

But the 24-year old backup dancer gets down, dirty and totally bad - in the best kind of way - in a pair of new promotional photos!

In two images from her upcoming music video (for the track "Dance Again") J. Lo poses with her young, shirtless man, as the couple blindfolds each other with a black cloth that reads "Love is blind."

The official video drops this Thursday during American Idol and, based on these pictures, it's safe to say both genders now have a reason to tune in...

Sony Xperia S ? Review

It?s impossible to hate Sony?s hardware design, it?s beautiful to look at, and it?s impressive to hold in your hand. It makes a statement, and most of all, it makes you feel classy as hell. As I said in the intro, the hardware on this device isn?t a problem at all ? it?s right up there with the best of the best in Android devices. The camera took some pretty decent photos, although the camera was shaky even with stabilisation on. The screen isn?t AMOLED, but it?s colour production is very natural and appealing to look at ? it?s a shame Sony make their icons look so damn bland. For people who use their phones outdoors, you?ll have no problem seeing the display. I found direct sunlight to have very little effect on the readability of the display.

A problem I had on previous Sony Ericsson device was the power button being recessed into the phone so it was hard to hit it, with the Xperia S it sticks out and is simple to press when holding the phone naturally. The inclusion of a HDMI-out port is fantastic for playing high-definition content from your phone onto your TV, although considering the amazing display on the Xperia S, I doubt you?ll bother playing it on your TV too often.

The glowing translucent plastic below the display is a really nice touch. It doesn?t shine light directly into your eyes (like the Xperia X10) instead it has a gentle glow 360 degrees around it and shows the icons of where you should press the capacitive buttons above (when they decide to work). I still kind of find it annoying how the icons are on the plastic as you sometimes ending pressing it instead of the buttons.

Call quality was perfectly fine and data speeds weren?t really an issue on Optus? 3G network, though they weren?t mind-blowing either. Battery life is good, but not great, considering it takes much longer than my Galaxy Nexus to charge, I would have thought it would have lasted a bit longer ? terrible logic to go by, obviously.

'Hunger Games' earns $61.1M to top 'Titans' sequel

(AP) ? "The Hunger Games" is still the first item on the menu for movie fans, taking in $61.1 million to remain the No. 1 film in its second weekend.

Studio estimates Sunday put Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games" well ahead of Sam Worthington's action sequel "Wrath of the Titans," which opened in second-place with $34.2 million.

That's far below the $61.2 million opening of its predecessor, "Clash of the Titans," two years ago. But distributor Warner Bros. opened "Clash" on Easter weekend, when young fans already were off school and in holiday mode. With Easter coming next weekend, the studio expects "Wrath" to catch up to "Clash" in the next few weeks.

Julia Roberts' comic "Snow White" reinvention "Mirror Mirror" debuted at No. 3 with $19 million. Released by Relativity Media, the film casts Roberts as the wicked queen opposite Lily Collins as Snow White.

Starring Jennifer Lawrence as a teen forced to compete in a televised death match, "The Hunger Games" lifted its domestic total to $251 million after just 10 days.

"We're obviously ecstatic at that quarter of a billion ? I like the sound of that, by the way," said David Spitz, head of distribution for Lionsgate. "We're going into a period now with Easter weekend and spring break where literally 30 percent of kids are out of school starting tomorrow. ... We have a great opportunity to continue to play and play and play."

"The Hunger Games" shot past "Dr. Seuss' the Lorax" ($189.6 million domestically) to become the top-grossing film this year.

"Wrath of the Titans" had a smaller domestic opening than 2010's "Clash," but the sequel was the top draw overseas with a debut of $78 million in 60 markets. That gave it a worldwide total of $112.2 million.

Dan Fellman, head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros., said he expects "Wrath" to follow a pattern similar to the studio's "Sherlock Holmes" sequel last December.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" opened earlier in the month and to much smaller crowds than the first movie, which premiered over the busy Christmas weekend. Yet "Game of Shadows" held on longer in subsequent weekends, its worldwide haul slightly exceeding the original movie.

Likewise, "Wrath of the Titans" should hold up better than "Clash" over Easter and the following weeks, Fellman said.

"We're going to get there. It's just going to be in a different pattern," Fellman said.

The sequel stars Worthington as ancient Greek hero Perseus in a battle of gods and men, including Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades.

"The Hunger Games" added $34.8 million overseas to raise its international total to $113.9 million and its worldwide haul to about $365 million.

While lagging behind the overseas business of such teen-based literary adaptations as the "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" movies, "The Hunger Games" is on a pace to surpass the domestic revenues of nearly all of those films.

"The Hunger Games" is headed well above $300 million domestically, a level reached by just three of the eight "Harry Potter" films and only once by any of the "Twilight" flicks.

In limited release, the Weinstein Co. documentary "Bully" opened strongly with $115,000 in five theaters, a healthy result for a non-fiction film.

An examination of school bullying, the film benefited from publicity over a campaign asking the Motion Picture Association of America to lower it from an R rating so that youths under 17 could see it without an adult.

Unable to secure a lower rating, Weinstein decided to release "Bully" unrated. The film earned the R rating for language, and filmmaker Lee Hirsch said he declined to edit out the offending words because it would have diminished the documentary's impact.

Hollywood's bull market continued, with audiences continuing their run on theaters. Overall domestic revenues totaled $154 million, up 23.5 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Hop" led with $37.5 million.

For the year, domestic receipts are at $2.6 billion, 20 percent ahead of 2011's, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

By far the biggest movie to open outside the busy summer and late-year holiday periods and the biggest non-sequel debut ever, "The Hunger Games" alone has given the industry a huge prelude to the blockbuster season that hits its stride in early May.

"If this were a summer movie, these would still be impressive numbers," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "Usually, you'll see sequels in a big franchise like this getting bigger and bigger, but this movie right out of the gate has already become one of the biggest blockbusters of all time."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Hunger Games," $61.1 million.

2. "Wrath of the Titans," $34.2 million.

3. "Mirror Mirror," $19 million.

4. "21 Jump Street," $15 million.

5. "Dr. Seuss' the Lorax," $8 million.

6. "John Carter," $2 million.

7. "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen," $1.3 million.

8. "Act of Valor," $1 million.

9. "A Thousand Words," $915,000.

10. "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," $835,000.
