(AP) ? Mexican authorities were unable Monday to overcome the resistance of an apocalyptic religious sect in western Mexico that has refused to allow public school teachers to hold classes in their town of Nueva Jerusalen, or New Jerusalem.

Lines of sect followers in brightly-colored robes lined up at the gated entrance to the town to face down dozens of federal and state police sent in Monday after an apparent compromise plan to set up schools outside the town broke down.

School was supposed to start earlier this month, but adherents of the quasi-Catholic sect burned and razed public schools in July because the school uniforms didn't conform to the sect's ban on modern dress and customs.

Women in New Jerusalem must wear colored robes depending on their status, and modern music, dance, sports and entertainment are all prohibited.

Authorities in the western state of Michoacan had pledged to have the schools back in service by Monday, but no classes were held because conservative members of the sect won't allow classes inside the temple-and-housing complex, and reformists ? who want their kids to go to school ? won't accept a proposed compromise to hold classes in neighboring towns.

Federal police commander Miguel Guerrero said talks continued Monday with both sect traditionalists and reformists.

"We are simply discussing the community's situation," Guerrero said after the talks.

Under Mexican law, grade school education is compulsory. The community practices a form of Latin Mass that is not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. The sect believes the town will be the only place saved in an impending apocalypse, which it predicts but no longer sets a date for.

Why 'Old School' Real Estate Marketing is Back

business cards networking

For the past few years deals have been plentiful for real estate investors; so plentiful in fact many of them felt that they no longer really had to do any marketing. Foreclosures and bank owned properties were everywhere. A lot of real estate investors have had their pick of great deals. All they had to do in many cases was to cherry pick bank owned properties right off the MLS.

As the supply of foreclosures and REOs begin to decline, these same people are once again going to have to think about how to market for deals in their real estate business; how they will compete with all of the other real estate investors out there for those same great deals.

I keep reading in all the forums and in many of the articles I?ve seen that great deals are getting harder and harder for investors to find. And many real estate investors I come in contact with are saying pretty much the same thing.

Old School Marketing

I read an article last week about the expected decline in foreclosures over the next few years, and how this would affect every investor?s real estate business. In this article, the author stated that real estate investors could expect to go back to ?old school marketing methods? to find deals like direct mail, email marketing, and other ?old school? strategies.

I found this statement incredibly funny, because almost all of the really successful investors that I personally know never quit doing those ?old school? marketing activities.

They may have added foreclosures to their other niche markets when looking for deals, and looking for bank owned properties on the MLS may have also be something they added to what they were already doing. But they never stopped their other marketing activities.

Do I need to make a change in what I?m doing?

I would say, ?Probably so?. If you have stopped the ?old school? marketing machine, it?s time to crank it back up again. Even if business is plentiful today working foreclosures, it?s inevitable that one day you will need a different stream of leads coming in the door. Getting back to basics should certainly include these 3 things:

  • If you are one of the many real estate investors out there that doesn?t have a website, make that your top priority. Before you spend the next 3 months trying to decide on a banner across the top and what colors you should use, just get one up to collect leads and get some basic SEO in place. You don?t look like a professional if you don?t have a website. Go back later and turn it into a masterpiece.
  • Be sure you have business cards. I went to my REIA meeting last week and believe it or not, there are still some investors that have never gotten around to getting business cards. One fellow told me that ?He used to have some, but he ran out about a year ago?. Never leave home without your business cards.
  • Pull out a piece of paper this week and spend some time creating a basic marketing plan if you don?t have one. It doesn?t have to be elaborate, but is has to be one designed to get you leads consistently. Once you have your plan, you actually have to take action and work your plan so make sure it is doable for you. Make a decision to add at least one new marketing strategy to your business in the next 30 days.

If you have a marketing plan I would love to hear about it.

Richard Elliot's Blog: Restaurant Review: The Begging Bowl, Peckham

Salad of grilled beef, roasted rice and baby gem lettuce

No sooner had I had a little moan on my friend John's blog that so Westernised and insipid is Thai food outside of Thailand (and notably exceptions like Chat Thai and Sailors Thai) that I wasn't going to bother eating Thai food any more; I read Hollow Leg's review of The Begging Bowl in Peckham and I was sucked straight back in!

With the promise of authentic Thai flavours I hastily arranged to meet my friend Ed in Bar Story for a drink followed by dinner at the Begging Bowl.

The restaurant is located on a bustling cross roads in Peckham. With the front of the restaurant open to the street and tables spilling onto the pavement The Begging Bowl was proving very popular. With a no reservations policy we overheard several tables nearby saying they were pleased to get in after a couple of unsuccessful attempts.

The first thing I noticed was the rather micro tables packed closely together, followed by the heady smell of Thai chilli, herbs and spices. While the prospect of elbow clashing didn't excite me the smells wafting from the kitchen certainly did.

Fish cakes with a sweet chilli sauce

All of the dishes are designed for sharing. We started with the taste sensation that was a salad of grilled beef, roasted rice and baby gem lettuce (?7.50). The tender beef was topped with crunchy roasted rice that has been ground more coarsely that I'm used to. What made the dish special was the dressing of fish sauce, lime, chilli and fresh mint in the salad. It was hot, sour, salty and refreshing all at the same time.

We also ordered the fish cakes with a sweet chilli sauce (?5.50). My experience of Thai fishcakes is that they usually round, flat and springy in texture. These fishcakes are light and had a more open texture.

Stir fried tofu, snake beans, baby sweetcorn,?

cashew nuts and coconut cream

Next up was the stir fried tofu, snake beans, baby sweetcorn, cashew nuts and coconut cream (?9.50). This dish was unlike anything I've had in Thailand before. I couldn't determine the main flavours in this one. Tasted on it's own the sauce was overwhelmingly salty, but didn't taste like it was dominated by fish sauce. As Ed remarked if this was the only dish you'd ordered you would be perfectly happy, but it didn't quite live up to the others.

Green curry of rabbit with appl aubergines,?

pea aubergines and baby corn

Our final dish was the green curry of rabbit with apple aubergines, pea aubergines and baby corn (?9.50). The curry tasted like it was homemade, not dissimilar to the curry pastes I tasted at Sailors Thai. Fragrant kaffir lime was followed by the complex and spicy curry. The flavour of the rabbit was dominated by the curry and didn't come through. The rabbit also tasted cold as if it has been cooked separately and added just before serving.

Overall I was very impressed with the food at The Begging Bowl. The service was friendly although being crammed into a corner of the restaurant meant it was little difficult to get the attention of the waiters / waitresses at points during the evening.

The authentic Thai flavours made both Ed and I reminisce over our holidays to Thailand.

Aaron Levie of Box Always on Fast-Forward - Disruptions - NYTimes ...

LOS ALTOS, Calif. ? It?s about 20 minutes into my lunch interview with Aaron Levie, co-founder of Box, at the headquarters of the online data storage company, and he still doesn?t have any food.

?Are you eating?? I ask, awkwardly swirling Thai noodles onto my fork.

Like someone swerving out of the way of oncoming traffic, he abruptly shifts from a lengthy ramble on the short history of cloud computing and responds: ?For your own sake, I?m not going to eat. I speak too quickly, and my food would be splattered all over the table.?

Mr. Levie, 27, the chief executive of Box, always operates on fast forward. He talks quickly. Walks quickly. Thinks quickly.

Even his clothing displays a need for speed. Mr. Levie doesn?t own a single pair of dress shoes. Instead, he opts for Asics or Puma sneakers with bright orange or pink laces, which he wears daily with a dark suit. ?Sneakers help me walk faster,? he says. ?Plus, it reminds me that we?re fighting for the end user ? the consumer ? because they wear sneakers, too!?

His career and his start-up have also grown at warp speed.

Just seven years ago, while attending the University of Southern California?s Marshall School of Business, Mr. Levie founded Box from his dorm room with Dylan Smith. Mr. Levie programmed the site, and Mr. Smith, who is now the company?s chief financial officer, played online poker to finance the business. (Until recently, the company was known as Box.net.)

The founders learned to identify the 3 percent of people who were ?terrible poker players? and beat them, Mr. Levie said. ?If you played against eight screens at a time, it basically just becomes statistical.?

After a brief stint in Seattle, Box moved to Oakland and operated out of a garage belonging to Mr. Levie?s uncle. For seven months, a small group of programmers lived and worked there among pizza crusts and Coca-Cola cans.

Now, Box is one of the fastest-growing companies in Silicon Valley. It has more than 500 employees and supplies cloud storage services to more than 11 million people and 125,000 businesses. It has raised $200 million from notable investors, including the Texas billionaire Mark Cuban, SAP Ventures and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. And revenue has more than doubled every year since Box was founded in 2005, although the company does not disclose the amount.

Sean Andersen, director of interactive services at Six Flags Entertainment, said he chose Box because of its ability to adapt for businesses. ?I first met Aaron at a trade show, and at the time, he was literally having two conversations at once,? Mr. Andersen said. ?They have this iteration cycle where they are changing and improving their product at a much faster scale than others.?

Mr. Levie talks about his business the way an ardent ?Star Trek? fan explains his favorite episode. As he sees it, enterprise computing, or software sold to companies, is at a pivotal moment as businesses move from clunky, in-house systems to Web-based ones operating in the cloud.

?If you think about the market that we?re in, and more broadly just the enterprise software market, the kind of transition that?s happening right now from legacy systems to the cloud is literally, by definition, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,? he says. ?This is probably going to happen at a larger scale than any other technology transition we?ve seen in the enterprise. Larger than client servers. Larger than mainframes.?

The business potential, he adds, seems limitless: ?We think we are just 1 percent into that transition.?

To Mr. Levie, mobile is the biggest driver of change. Before, legacy systems used to be connected to Windows computers, and people printed out most of their documents. Now, printers are giving way to iPhones and iPads, all of which are connected to the cloud.

?All of a sudden, if you think about the entire ecosystem of connected devices that can pull down information, access content and allow me to share and work and communicate, the vast majority now are not Windows computers,? he says. ?They are iPhones. They are iPads. They are Android devices. Mobile is the catalyst that can actually re-evaluate and re-engineer your entire I.T. strategy.?

This is where he expects most of his company?s growth to come. As chief information officers of Fortune 500 companies continue to switch from mainframes and allow employees to work remotely from mobile devices, including tablets and laptops, the cloud and services like Box will become all the more important.

While Mr. Levie runs a multimillion-dollar business and oversees hundreds of employees, he is still a 20-something tech geek. In Silicon Valley, where he is often described as the son of the mad professor from ?Back to the Future,? he arrives at the office around noon and works until 3 a.m. After work, he goes home and plays video games to ?wind down.?

The company?s headquarters are infused with his youthful energy. A bright yellow slide spirals from the second floor to the lobby. Swings hang from the ceiling of meeting areas. Hundreds of stuffed unicorns litter the office, sitting on chairs, above computer monitors and abandoned in the hallway.

All of this, Mr. Levie says, helps employees remember that they are fighting for the consumer. He believes this philosophy separates Box from its competitors.

?This is the thing that we think will always keep us competitive with enterprise incumbents,? he says, noting that traditional enterprise software is often clunky and confusing. He says Box tries to ?fight the man? by making software from a consumer standpoint so it can easily be downloaded to any device and remain secure.

I reminded him that technically, he is ?the man.? As if momentarily placing a finger on a spinning record, he pauses for a millisecond, looks up and says, ?Oh, yeah,? before turning down a new street in his mind to explain the importance of security in cloud software.

But ?the man? is different in this case. Even with the colorful sneakers and boyish looks, the young chief executive stands out for his philosophy, which he demonstrates on his personal Twitter account with jokes about cloud computing and other technologies.

In a recent post on Twitter, he wrote: ?Blogs made it hard for me to read full articles. Now tweets make blogs hard to read. Soon, I?ll only be able to consume shapes.?

Or, taking a jab at smart guys like him: ?Start-ups are for people that wanted to run marathons, cage fight and hunt alligators, but were born with asthma.?

Charlie Sheen Invites Miley Cyrus Over, Praises New Haircut

Miley Cyrus has been going crazy on Twitter these days, sending out photos left and right of her new haircut.

And speaking of going crazy, the young star has a new admirer: Charlie Sheen!

Charlie Sheen in TorontoMiley Cyrus at Home

Miley actually started the unexpected lovefest between these two last year, writing (after a 17-month absence from Twitter): "I'm not gonna lie. I came back to twitter for 2 reasons. My fans and to follow Charlie Sheen."

And she continued it yesterday, addressing the actor on that social network with: "@charliesheen IS THE [bomb icon]."

The Anger Management actor then replied to the props with a few of his own: "Idk, w/ that new haircut Miles...You're the [bomb icon],Come watch the show at my place! xo c."

It's nice that Cyrus has an admirer and all, especially with the criticism her fresh look has received online, but allow us to offer Miley this piece of advice: DON'T GO!

Google Street View in Nunavut

Are you planning a trip to Nunavut in the near future? Google Street View will help you big time. A team of riders is starting an Arctic expedition to map some of the northernmost parts of the country. They actually met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Cambridge Bay yesterday.

Wait a minute... Riders? Yep! The Google folks are using not their traditional Google Street View cars but rather customized tricycles with all the necessary technology. They've recruited teenagers and community elders to take advantage of their knowledge of the local roads and sites.

The goal is to upgrade the current maps with the most accurate data and sharpest pictures possible.

Google Street View mapped Antarctica back in 2010 and will take pictures of Australia's Great Barrier Reef this fall with the help of a Google submarine.

Central bank uncertainty weighs on investors

LONDON (Reuters) - Investors generally sold riskier assets across financial markets on Friday, remaining to a certain degree in limbo until they learn how much of a punch central banks will give to the stumbling global economy.

The euro zone's struggle to prevent its own break up continues to dominate markets and play on economic confidence.

European shares <.ftse>, which have suffered their worst run in over a month in the last few days as euro zone uncertainty has returned, were flat but MSCI's main global index <.miwd00000pus> was down around a third of a percent on the day.

"We are in a vacuum policy wise ahead of the Jackson Hole meeting and the (European Central Bank) meeting on September 6 so we are in a wait and see mode," said Saxo Bank chief economist Steen Jakobsen.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and other central bank leaders meet in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, next week for an annual get-together that often hints at what monetary policy is to come.

"We are waiting to see whether we get QE3 (another round of asset buying from the Fed) and to see how the ECB is going play the promise that it will help the peripherals, so right now the market is just concentrating on technicals."

Key global stock markets have risen 15-20 percent since June as hopes of a resolution to the euro zone crisis have sustained investor optimism despite a deterioration in company earnings outlooks.

But the rises appear to have come to a halt over the last week. The S&P 500 has failed to break through 1425-30 points, while Europe's top shares have been unable to climb above 1115 points.

WILD CARD

The euro eased back from its recent seven-week highs versus the dollar to stand at $1.2543.

Pushing it down were fading hopes of a rapid new euro zone drive to end its crisis as politicians signaled new plans could take another month to put together. The dollar inched up 0.2 percent to 78.60 yen.

"The data calendar is fairly empty so we suspect that trading will be technical in nature today," said KBC economist Piet Lammens, pointing to a meeting in Berlin between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras the main point of interest for markets.

"Merkel and Samaras is of course always a wild card but we have had so many indications that the Greek issue will be put back to the end of September, so we don't expect any breaking news coming from that," Lammens said.

Triple A-rated German government bonds, traditionally favored by risk-adverse investors, have rebounded sharply in recent days, tracking the rise in U.S. Treasuries and helped by a return of uncertainty among investors about the euro zone's progress out of its debt crisis.

Bund futures were up 25 ticks at 143.75 in early trading while Spanish Italian and Portuguese bonds saw falls ranging between 0.1 and 0.4 percent.

MESS

Oil prices, which have been trading in a tight range this week, slipped below $115 per barrel. "It's no secret that the global economy is in bad shape," said Tony Nunan, a risk manager at Mitsubishi Corp in Tokyo.

"Europe's a mess, the U.S. is struggling and China, which was seen as a growth engine, is also sputtering -- all of which points to weak demand for crude."

Investors were also watching Spain again on Friday, after three euro zone sources told Reuters that Madrid is negotiating with European partners over conditions for aid to bring down its borrowing costs, though the country has not made a final decision to request a bailout.

Madrid's IBEX <.ibex> had jumped nearly 30 percent since comments by European Central Bank head Mario Draghi in late July sparked expectations of fresh measures to help lower the borrowing costs of Spain and Italy. But it has lost 4.7 percent since a peak hit on Monday, although charts show the index has managed to keep its four-week upward channel intact.

"Pullback would be welcomed by many money managers who failed to take part in the recent move and at some stage will need to tell clients of the underperformance," IG Markets strategist Stan Shamu wrote in a note.

The FCPA Compliance Strategic Plan ? Some Lessons for the - Blog

The Houston Astros were swept this week by the St. Louis Cards and are now on a 7-43 run, the worst in the majors since 1943. On the upside, the entire starting nine fielded by the Astros? on Thursday had only one player, outfielder Ben Francisco, making more than the league minimum (approximately $483,000) and their combined salary was about $4 million less than the one-year deal of $9.75 million that Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook has just signed. So our new Astros owner should have plenty of money for those new American League uniforms he has been secretly working on.

One of the things that my colleague Stephen Martin talks about is the need for strategic planning for your Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) compliance program. He suggests a 1, 3 and 5 year strategic plan which you should utilize as a road map for your compliance program in these time frames. Equally important, as a former state and federal prosecutor, he believes that such a document would be an important item to produce to a prosecutor, who might be reviewing your compliance program in the event of a voluntary self-disclosure, a Dodd-Frank or other whistleblower event, which has led your company to receive a subpoena or letter of inquiry or an industry sweep. He believes that such a strategic plan could well lead to the development of credibility for your company and your compliance program in the event of one of the aforementioned eventualities.

I pondered over Stephen?s thought on the subject of a strategic plan recently when I heard the Houston Astros General Manager say that he was not sure what plan he has to make the Astros a winning if not relevant, team again. Basically he said it was a 1, 3 or 5 year plan, or perhaps something else, he just wasn?t sure. With those words of encouragement in mind it would appear that the Astros plan is the following: (1) Year One: Lose to a new set of teams as the Astros will move from the National League to the America League; (2) Year 3: Continue to lose; (3) Year 5: Be all you can be. How is that for a strategic plan?

With the above in mind I was interested to read an article in the Houston Business Journal, entitled ?Strategic planning needs constant follow-up to be successful? by Bruce Rector. As with Martin he recognizes that while a strategic plan can serve as guide for your company going forward, it must actually be utilized to garner any use out of it. Rector notes that ?if your company and management team have expended the time and resources to pull together a strategic plan, the next logical step is to follow up and keep things on track.? While Rector?s article is not aimed at the compliance arena, I believe that the steps he lays out, translate without difficulty, into steps a compliance officer can take to meet the suggestion laid out by Martin above.

  • Review the Goals of the Strategic Plan. This requires that you arrange a time for the Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) and team to review the goals of the Strategic Plan. Rector advises that to the extent possible this should be done in person. The CCO should lead a discussion of the Strategic Plan and determine how this goal in the Plan measures up to its implementation in your company.
  • Design an Execution Plan. Here Rector advises that the ?Keep it Simple Sir? or KISS method is the best to move forward. This would suggest that for each compliance goal, there should be a simple and straight forward plan to ensure that the goal in question is being addressed. Rector notes that any ?plan must be specific with clear tasking and deliverables and a definite timeline for delivery.?
  • Put Accountabilities in Place. In any plan of execution, there must be accountabilities attached to them. Simply having a time line is not enough. This means that the persons tasked with the responsibility of performing the tasks be clearly identified, by both the individual so tasked and the actual task they are assigned to complete. Accountability also includes a ?follow-up mechanism to ensure that these vital goals are achieved.? This requires the CCO or other senior compliance department representative to put these in place and then mandate a report requirement on how the task assigned is being achieved.
  • Schedule the Next Review of the Plan. Most interestingly, Rector recommends a review of the foregoing process on a weekly basis. While noting that this may seem time consuming, he believes that once the group assigned with this responsibility gets ?into the rhythm, it can go smoothly.? While I would not necessarily agree that weekly meetings are required, Rector does correctly note that such regularity allows any problems which may arise to be detected and corrected more quickly than if meetings are held at a less frequent basis.

Martin?s guidance that a FCPA strategic plan can be a key part of your overall compliance program is sound advice. However, simply developing a strategic plan is not enough. Rector concludes by stating that ?Part of management?s responsibility is to continually reinforce the vision and goals of the company, as set forth in this plan.? This is particularly true in the compliance arena, where assessment and updating are critical to an ongoing best practices compliance program. If you follow the process laid out by Rector, you will put a mechanism in place to demonstrate your company?s commitment to compliance by following through on intentions as set forth in your strategic plan.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Building upon its fundraising prowess, Mitt Romney's campaign began a secretive data-mining project this summer to sift through Americans' personal information ? including their purchasing history and church attendance ? to identify new and likely wealthy donors, The Associated Press has learned.

The project employs strategies similar to those the business world uses to influence the way Americans shop and think. Now they're being used to sway presidential elections. The same personal data consumers give away ? often unwittingly when they swipe their credit cards or log into Facebook ? is now being used by the people who might one day occupy the White House.

For Romney's data-mining project, which began as early as June, the Republican candidate quietly turned to a little-known but successful analytics firm that previously performed marketing work for a colleague tied to Bain & Co., the management-consulting firm that Romney once led.

The head of Buxton Co. of Fort Worth, Texas, chief executive Tom Buxton, confirmed to the AP his company's efforts, which help Romney identify potentially wealthy and previously untapped Republican donors across the country. The Romney campaign declined to discuss on the record its work with Buxton or the project's overall success.

There are no records of payments to Buxton from Romney's campaign, the Republican National Committee or a joint fundraising committee. Under federal law, companies cannot use corporate treasury funds or resources, such as proprietary data analysis, for in-kind contributions to federal campaigns.

The effort by Romney appears to be the first example of a political campaign using such extensive data analysis. President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has long been known as data-savvy, but Romney's project appears to take a page from the Fortune 500 business world and dig deeper into available consumer data.

Buxton said he's working for the Romney campaign because he wants "to be on the winning team."

He once worked with a former Romney business partner to provide insights, for example, about where Petco should open a new pet-supply store to maximize profits. In addition to Buxton, the data-mining project was described to the AP by a Romney fundraiser who spoke on condition of anonymity because the fundraiser did not want to face repercussions for describing internal campaign processes.

Businesses use those kinds of analytics firms to answer key questions for clients, such as where to build a retail store or where to mail pamphlets touting a new product. The analysis doesn't directly bring in campaign contributions, but it generates the equivalent of sales leads for Romney's campaign.

The project relies upon a sophisticated analysis by powerful computers of thousands of commercially available, expensive databases that are lawfully bought and sold behind the scenes by corporations, including details about credit accounts, families and children, voter registrations, charitable contributions, property tax records and survey responses. It combines marketing data with what is known in this specialized industry as psychographic data analysis, which tries to ferret out Americans' consumer behavior and habits.

An early test analyzed details of more than 2 million households near San Francisco and elsewhere on the West Coast and identified thousands of people who would be comfortably able and inclined to give Romney at least $2,500 or more.

An AP analysis this week determined that Romney's campaign has made impressive inroads into even traditionally Democratic neighborhoods, collecting more than $350,000 this summer around San Francisco in contributions that averaged $400 each. High-dollar donors have been essential to Romney's election effort, unlike Obama, who relies on more contributors giving smaller amounts.

Romney and the GOP have out-fundraised Obama's re-election effort for the past three months.

The fate of the presidency may depend on who raises more money in the campaign, whose cost for the first time is approaching $2 billion. That figure includes hundreds of millions of dollars spent by super political action committees that accept unlimited and in some cases effectively anonymous contributions from millionaires, companies, labor groups and others to pay for television campaign advertisements across the nation.

Buxton confirmed that the data-mining project began with the help of Dick Boyce, Romney's former Bain & Co. colleague, after Romney joined fundraising forces with the Republican National Committee. Buxton expressed such confidence in his business and analysis methods that, in nearly two decades of running his firm, he told AP he has always been able to answer essential questions for customers.

"I can look at data of any kind and say, 'I want to know who that $100 donor could be,'" Buxton said. "We look at data of any kind."

Obama's campaign employs its own form of data analysis to lure potential supporters, via Facebook and Twitter, to fine-tune messages for supporters and potential donors. The Obama campaign declined to comment on its internal fundraising practices, although Buxton said it doesn't work with Obama's campaign.

Romney's campaign has also been secretive about how it raises its money, and most fundraising events have been closed to the press. Unlike Obama, Romney's campaign has declined to publicly identify the names of major fundraisers, known as bundlers, who have helped amass much of its money. Details of this project have not been made public until now.

Buxton is not listed as a vendor in any of the campaign's finance reports submitted to the Federal Election Commission, although some campaigns do not report expenses until the vendor sends them a bill.

When AP initially asked Buxton about its work for Romney, it declined to acknowledge that it helped raise money for the RNC, even as its own website displayed a prominent log-in page for "2012 presidential donor prospecting." That web address contained the letters "RNC" ? a common abbreviation for the Republican National Committee. After the AP's continued questioning, the company replaced the "RNC" letters in the web address with a generic "campaign" the next day.

This is not Buxton's first foray into politics: In 2006, the company produced 1,000 names for a Connecticut campaign to meet a write-in ballot requirement, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram then reported, and 900 of them signed up.

Few in Washington campaign circles recognized the work of Buxton, although it lists thousands of other clients in the public and private sector, including hospitals and local governments.

How We get Side Tracked (fall out of love) ? Love & Relationships / Marriage - Part II

?

Once we are in love with someone the forces that brought us together (i.e. physical attraction, social pressure, & a need to be connected) change.? After a while the sexual connection often times lessens; we have already satisfied the force of social pressure as we are in a relationship; we feel connected because we know our partner is around.

What makes relationships even more challenging is that the forces of life push couples away from each other direction.? There are the demands of: work, school, children, and money to name a few of the things we have to deal with.

Once we are now ?comfortably? involved in our relationship, often happens that we spend our energy dealing with other issues. The problem becomes that we don?t realize that love is a verb, it is the things you do with your partner. It is the way we communicate with them, deal with arguments and anger, plan our future, to name a few variables that determine the course of our relationships.

?

I?d love to hear what your experience has been in your relationship.? Have you found that over the years your relationship may be O.K. but deep down you know it?s not like it use to be and you tell yourself: ?This is normal for relationships, over time everything tends get less?.

?

In my last blog entry on this subject I?ll be talking about what we need to do make sure we have a deep love in our relationships.

Back to school wellness for kids

w_kids.jpgYoung people are headed back to school. We can support their school success by creating habits at home that will support both the health of their body and mind.
A good day starts with the night before
Children require more sleep than adults to be able to function their best during the day. Elementary and middle school age children should be getting 10-12 hours of sleep per night and high school students 9-10 hours. In young people, the signs of poor sleep differ from adults and can often be characterized by 'hyperactive' behaviors. As caregivers, we must create an environment that allows children to rest. We can help our children establish consistent sleep routines by modeling these behaviors ourselves. For example, is important to set limits on the use of technology (computers, cell phones, ipods) especially in the evening hours. It is also recommended that children not have televisions in their room.

Start the morning with breakfast (read on, not just any breakfast)
It matters what we have for breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day. Eating a breakfast that contains protein (e.g. a serving of healthy breakfast meat, eggs, peanut butter, yogurt, cheese) and complex carbohydrates (e.g. oatmeal, a slice of whole grain toast, brown rice) will allow your child to have a constant source of fuel that gets them through the morning. Studies have shown that children who skip breakfast perform less well in school.

Help your kids to stop drinking (their calories)
The average American consumes 150 pounds of sugar per year. For kids the number is even higher and most of his sugar intake comes in the form of high calorie sweetened beverages (soda, sweet teas, juice drinks). Increasing numbers of children and young people are dealing with very grown up health issues like being overweight, diabetes and heart disease. As a result, this may be the first generation where children may not live as long as their parents. The consumption of sugar and sweetened drinks is being shown to be very addicting. The same rules apply as to quitting any other addiction: enlist support, do not keep it in the house (stop buying soda and teas and juices) and plan and provide alternatives (water, milk and whole fruits). You may need to go slow. If you fall off the wagon start again. If your children have developed a (sugar) drinking habit, one of the best things you can do for their long-term health this school year is an intervention.

They have got to move it move it
Kids (and adults) need to move to be healthy. The evidence shows that regular physical activity is associated with better school performance. School age children should get at least an hour of physical activity each day. How do we do this? Many of us have children. None of us have enough time. Offer to do childcare exchanges -- take your kids and your friend's kids to the park while they prepare dinner and they can do the same for you the next night. Make it a competition, have kids compete e.g. doing wind sprints or jumping jacks. If you really cannot get outside look at youtube for kids workouts, there are many.

Reading is Fundamental
As parents we all want our children to reach their full potential and be successful. Helping our children to establish a lifelong love for learning is crucial. So, even when the homework is done, make reading a priority. Assist your children in finding books and information that they will enjoy and that will expand their world. Before children are able to read, read to them. As they transition becoming independent readers, you can read with them and then discuss what you have read. Ask them their opinion about events in the world and listen carefully (you may be surprised). Encourage the use of community information resources - our local library system, local writers and free weekly community newspapers. Whatever our children's dreams and aspirations, being able to read information, comprehend it and apply it in their life is a skill that will ensure their health and success.
