The Seven Crucial Steps to Building Your Service Business

by Monica Shah, Money Expert & Startup Princess Fairy Godmother

Here is what breaks my heart.? I get so many clients who call me and say: ?I want to launch my product to my list and sell hundreds of them.? Then I want to fill my group with 30 people so that I only have to work with five one-on-one clients. Can you tell me how to do that??? Want to know my answer?? ?Yes, but it?s going to take some time.? No one builds it all overnight.?

Ladies, please know that just like any other business, there?s a model to the service business ? meaning there?s a certain sequence of steps.? If you follow these steps, you?ll succeed.? If you don?t, you won?t get the numbers that you are looking for.? And here?s the kicker ? the thing that drives me crazy ? in the marketplace there are people that are telling you that you can rush through all these steps in 3 months.? But it?s just not true.?? Please don?t believe that.? Furthermore, do not be hard on yourself if you?ve been at it a couple of years. It takes years to build a full business with multiple streams of income.? That is normal.

Here?s the sequence of steps to launch products (and large group programs) in your service business (yes, breathe that sigh of relief).

Start by working with individual clients.? This is especially true if you need money yesterday.? You can go out and meet these folks by doing workshops, networking and meeting referral partners.? Note that these are OFFLINE marketing activities.? You can meet someone today and have them become a client tomorrow. I find that off-line marketing activities allow you to convert clients much more quickly than online.? It?s simple, if someone meets and likes you in person, they are going to buy from you faster.? For detailed instructions on this step see my Revenue Breakthrough Program at www.revenuebreakthroughprogram.com.

Keep working with some individual clients to build your confidence and your expertise.? This will help you hone in on the best information to put in your products and groups.? It will also build testimonials that you can use later.

Begin to build your list online.? Build your site, choose your newsletter software and write your free gift.? I suggest 1-shoppingcart, but there are many others. The first 200 people on your list can be friends, family, co-workers etc.? That way you?ll have someone to send the newsletter to.? Then you?ll begin to engage in online business building activities (again, for details here see www.revenuebreakthroughprogram.com).

Start sending your newsletter out CONSISTENTLY every month, two weeks or week.? It doesn?t matter when you send it ? as long as you stay consistent.? The newsletter helps you to build a relationship with your clients online.? If you put out an offer and you haven?t built a relationship with your list over time, they just aren?t going to buy.

Once you get your list from 400 ? 1000 or more, AND you?ve been sending out your newsletter and other special gifts consistently for at least six months ? now you have a list that is willing to buy from you.? Now, you?ll have much more success selling group programs and products.? For some of you, your list will buy very quickly and you?ll have a few great sales.? For others, your list will still need more time with you and only a few will buy.? But keep going and don?t be discouraged.

Keep growing your list with joint ventures, teleseminars, workshops and the like.? And keep creating a relationship with your list through content-filled newsletters and special gifts.? Give yourself a couple of years to grow a list of 5,000 ? 10,000 folks who like what you do and are very happy to purchase your high-quality products.

You see, it?s not rocket science!? But it does require knowledge of the right sequence, consistent focus and persistent effort.? Many people who come to me have wasted a lot of effort in building their business in the wrong order or by buying pieces of the process.? For example, they focused solely on social media.? Or they focused only on doing teleseminars.? What you need to do is create a solid foundation ? step-by-step building of your business where you understand all the marketing vehicles offline and online and you put every piece into place in the right order at the right time.?? You can?t skip steps!
The truth is that if this process were overnight, wouldn?t everybody be millionaires?

I hope this helps those of you that are struggling out there with seeing how the pieces fit together.? And if you?d like to learn the step-by-step process, then please check out the Revenue Breakthrough Program.? The next program starts in October of 2012.

Monica Shah, founder of Revenue Breakthrough helps women business owners double their incomes in 12 months or less ? without going broke or crazy in the process.? If you would like to learn more about how to double your income, check out the Money Magnet Kit and learn how to earn, attract and save more this month than every month before: http://www.revenuebreakthrough.com/moneymagnet.? You?ll learn the 4 essential strategies for doubling your income and keeping more money in the bank. ?

What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank

Author Nathan Englander to speak in West Hartford Oct. 3

By Cindy Mindell

Nathan Englander

Nathan Englander is the author of the internationally best-selling short-story collection, ?For the Relief of Unbearable Urges?, and the novel, ?The Ministry of Special Cases?. His short fiction and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Washington Post, as well as The O. Henry Prize Stories and numerous editions of The Best American Short Stories. He is also translator of ?The New American Haggadah? by Jonathan Safran Foer and author of a play based on ?The Twenty-Seventh Man,? a story included in ?For the Relief of Unbearable Urges.?
Englander will discuss his latest book, the short-story collection, ?What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank,? on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Renbrook School in West Hartford. The conversation will be moderated by author and journalist Colin McEnroe. Admission is free.
Englander was raised in a modern Orthodox community on Long Island in the ?80s. His mother, Merle Tilton, grew up in West Hartford. The family would make monthly visits to her parents, Irene and Oscar Tilton, when Englander was young. ?I have many happy childhood memories from West Hartford,? he says. I really love that town.?
His Jewish background did and didn?t form him as a writer. ?My upbringing didn?t affect the decision to be a writer; there is no such job description in my community,? he says. ?I can think of religious writers, but it?s a very rare concept, a person who writes fiction for others as a modern Orthodox Jew. It wasn?t an idea I or my community held. There was a framed set of aspirations based on our education and set of beliefs, which were more about making a Jewish family and raising your kids a certain way. So it was not an impetus toward writing in any way.?
Englander earned a degree in Judaic studies from Binghamton University and spent his junior year in Jerusalem. He would return to that city in 1996, living as an Israeli for five years before relocating to Brooklyn mere days ahead of the 9/11 attacks.
In his writing, Englander straddles many Jewish worlds, and he likes chewing over how much his Jewish experience and identity influence his writing.
?On the outside you can say I?ve lived many different angles of Jewish experience ? Orthodox, Israeli, radically secular; urban, and suburban and ex-pat.? he says. ?My experience has many angles and it?s ever-changing. Where the answer gets metaphysical is that, growing up in a closed world, I also grew up in a complete world, though I knew there were other worlds out there. My writing is not about growing up as a specific kind of Jew but about my experience of being alive. So the answer is that I end up being a more complex writer than a ?Jewish writer.? My characters and subject matter are Jewish but that?s not lesser or other, and it?s not a conscious choice of subject matter. My whole world is a complete Jewish universe in so many ways. When I write about characters and situations, I?m not writing about the other; I?m talking about my own experience. Nobody asks an Italian writer why they write about Italians or an American Christian writer how their upbringing affects their characters or plot.?
As an adult looking back on his childhood, Englander says that he is grateful for the world of stories he had access to. ?So much of my education and belief is about stories told passionately,? he says. ?History and bible were taught as story. That had a great effect on the way my brain works.?
Englander?s tone and content have been compared by critics and other authors to the likes of Isaac Bashevis Singer. But it is the Philip Roth generation of writers whom Englander most identifies with.
?Singer?s stories had a huge effect on me, especially the ?Manor? novels,? he says. ?I love Philip Roth, Bernard Malamud, Saul Bellow, and those authors are experiencing and expressing a different set of generational concerns: they write about coming to America or the first-generation experience, and becoming American. So I?m interested in one or two generations of American Jewish writers before me, writing about things American Jews now take for granted. My mom talks about the time when not everyone used to hire Jews or let them live in certain places ? that fight to be fully part of American culture. But what?s interesting is that my parents and their generation, who went to public schools, were the ones who became religious and sent their kids to Jewish day schools. A lot of the modern Orthodox world came out of the generation who gave up religion to become ?American,? whatever that meant. My parents? generation had the idea that they would work together to set up a community, a suburban shtetl. The only way for a community like that to be able to form was inside a democracy. One year, I was on 72nd Street in New York during Sukkot, and I saw a bunch of guys davening mincha and blocking traffic. Where in history has a bunch of Jews felt that comfortable davening openly in the street? This is a special place.?
Englander references Singer?s book, ?In My Father?s Court? as a potent reference to this peculiarly Jewish phenomenon. ?You grow up religious and find yourself out in a broader world, to eat new things and see new things. It?s a world cracked open. It?s never not exciting to be out in the world, and that?s the sentiment behind my writing. The emotion expressed by my characters is mine ? you?re only limited by your emotional experience and being willing to imagine it.?
There is also a special alchemy that infuses the work of writers who leave their homeland. ?An abnormal percentage of writers I live were ex-pats, people who have changed cities and languages for significant periods,? Englander says. ?If you?re living in a country with a language different from your own, there are so many cultural lessons that make you rethink everything.?
Englander has been speaking all over the world about his latest book of short stories. The first striking thing about the new collection is the title ? a reference to Raymond Carver?s ?What We Talk About When We Talk About Love? ? and seeing ?Anne Frank? printed in Day-Glo pink and orange. (?I love the cover,? Englander says.)
?I never had a more literal title in my life,? he says. ?People ask why Anne Frank?s name is in the title. I?m not a survivor; I?m a kid from Long Island, and my focus on the Holocaust or memories or experience of it are all taught to me. The question behind the title story and ?Sister Hills? is, who owns the Holocaust, who owns history, who has the right to use it? Six million Jews were murdered. Why do we focus on one survivor? What does that name mean? She?s a person, a concept, an idea. I gave a talk in San Francisco at a school where they use Anne Frank?s diary in the curriculum, and some of the kids think she?s a character in a book. What happens when we use one book to try to convey the history of the Holocaust? How is it being taught? Why use one person? In my book, I?m talking about the concept of Anne Frank, not the person. She?s not in the book; her name is used as a vehicle to explore how we observe memory. Phillip Roth actually uses Anne Frank in ?The Ghost Writer.? How racy it was for a writer to do that so close to the end of the war. I think it is a wonderful exploration of the same idea of memory.?
Englander takes issue with those who go so far as to compare social phenomena with the Holocaust. ?When someone says that intermarriage is the second Holocaust ? and this may be someone who greatly respects the memory of the dead, has the greatest respect for the Jewish people and Jewish continuity and community ? but the idea of comparing someone falling in love with a person you don?t approve of to millions of Jews being murdered???
It is Englander?s readers who help shed light on the meaning of his stories. ?I write the stories and have no distance from them and then talk about them for months,? he says. ?I come up with my own theories about where my stories come from, but my readers have more insight and right to say what the stories are about.?
Englander says that he?s asked a lot about why he left Jerusalem. ?I fall in love with cities and take pleasure from living in them,? he says. ?When I lived in Jerusalem, I felt that it was the best city in the world. I moved back to Brooklyn, which feels in some ways like the true Jewish homeland, and now Brooklyn is the best city in the world.?
In Jerusalem, he lived in the Nachlaot section of the city during ?a time of terrible terrorism? and believed deeply in the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. ?There are so many elements around how life changed politically and socially during that period,? he says. ?By five years, I really could have stayed in Jerusalem. But the great heartbreak of my life was seeing the peace process crumble. To recognize that the government isn?t doing anything and that the Israelis and Palestinians aren?t trying to secure peace, that seemed like madness to me.?
Beyond the political situation that defines Jerusalem as a particularly charged place, ?there is something about the way people are educated about Jerusalem as the center of the Jewish community, that it is supposed to have a larger idea to it ? this idea of aliya [?going up,? immigration to Israel] and yerida [?going down,? emigration from Israel],? he says. ?Making aliyas means moving to a place with the intent of being buried in its soil. When you move from New Haven to West Hartford, no one says, ?I thought you were going to be buried on the hill in New Haven.? Because of that larger idea around Jerusalem, I feel like I?m supposed to have justifiable reasons for leaving. I miss my friends in Jerusalem, I miss my coffee shop and my hummus shop. I thrive in New York and had a great adventure in Jerusalem for five years; I spent more than half a decade there in my late teens and ?20s. At the same time, I thrive in New York. I enjoy living in the writers? scene; artistically, the city is very rich.?
While known mostly for his short stories, Englander has been exploring other genres via his work on ?The New American Haggadah? and his play, now being shaped in production meetings.
?I?m falling in love with these new forms and investing in them, and I don?t necessarily have to identify my work as Jewish,? he says. ?I am a fiction writer and these projects reminded me again, recalibrated my brain, that I don?t just tell stories, and it brought me back to what I loved about being a writer in the first place ? being fully absorbed in something without being defined by it.?
As translator on the Haggadah project, Englander got to really examine the words and concepts behind the text. ?I got to sit with primal sentences, with a line from the bible about the Creation, and think about its meaning, its rhythm, how we perceive the words, how we perceive the actual and true meaning, the literal meaning, the literal meaning with intention,? he says. ?Just to spend an afternoon with a word or sentence, it was a whole education about language again.?
The new projects have done no less than to bring Englander back to the pure form of craft. ?It?s not, ?If I?m translating, I must be a translator; if I write a play, I must be a playwright,?? he says. ?What does it mean to be writing a play and not call yourself a playwright? I?ve been relearning form, and rethinking what it means to be a writer.?

Home sales jumped to the highest level in more than two years in August, the National Association of Realtors said. Sales rose 7.8 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.82 million, the most since May 2010.

Earlier, the government reported that construction of single-family homes in August also was the fastest in more than two years.

Stocks?of homebuilders, already up after the construction report, rose sharply after 10 a.m., when the jump in home sales was reported. D.R. Horton Inc. rose 87 cents, or 4.1 percent, to $22.22; Beazer Homes USA Inc. rose 22 cents, or 6.2 percent, to $3.75; and KB Home rose 46 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $13.16.

The gains for broader?stock?indexes were muted. At its high for the day, the Dow Jones industrial average was up just 62 points.

The housing numbers "are fantastic news," but traders continue to worry about recent discouraging signals this week like downgrades of railroads and a warning from Federal Express that the global economy is slowing, said JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist for TD Ameritrade, a retail brokerage.

"The market is at a bit of a conundrum," Kinahan said. "There are just constantly these mixed signals about what's going on."

The Dow closed up 13.32 points, or 0.1 percent, at 13,577.96. The Dow is just a 4 percent rally shy of its all-time high of 14,164, reached Oct. 9, 2007.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.73 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,461.05. Telecom and consumer discretionary?stocks?added the most among the industry groups in the S&P 500 index.

Energy?stocks?suffered as the price of oil fell $3.31, or 3.5 percent, to $91.98 per barrel. Traders are questioning whether economic growth is strong enough to justify a recent run-up to $100 per barrel. Crude is down 7 percent this week.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 4.82 points, or 0.2 percent, to 3,182.62.

Earlier, Asian and European markets closed higher after the Bank of Japan announced a massive asset purchasing plan similar to what the Federal Reserve approved last week. Japan's main?stock?index hit a four-month high.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.78 percent from 1.81 percent late Tuesday as demand for safe investments increased. A bond's yield falls as its price rises.

In corporate news, Cracker Barrel leapt $3.69, or 5.8 percent, to $67.31, after the purveyor of country cooking and homespun curios said it doubled its net income in the fiscal fourth quarter.

General Mills rose 71 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $40.02 after saying its fiscal first-quarter net income increased 35 percent on strong foreign yogurt sales.

AutoZone Inc. jumped $12, or 3.4 percent, to $369.84 after saying its fiscal fourth-quarter net income rose 7.4 percent on strong sales at new stores.

The Voice Shake-Up: Usher and Shakira to Replace Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green?

The Voice Season 3 just got underway, but is there already a casting shake-up in the works for Season 4? According to a new report, at least, there may well be:

Usher and Shakira are replacing Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green.

Alleged insiders say Shakira and Usher would take the place of Christina and Cee Lo alongside Adam Levine and Blake Shelton at the end of the current season.

Usher Raymond PhotoShakira Picture

Earlier this month, Aguilera opened up to Ryan Seacrest about the show, admitting she once viewed her job as a coach on The Voice "kind of like a side project."

"[I thought], 'It'll keep me close to my son [Max, 4] in L.A. I don't have to travel," the Grammy winner said. "Then it kind of took off, and there goes my free time!"

The Voice sources say Christina will use her break from the program to focus on tours and promotional duties surrounding the release of her new album, Lotus.

Christina Aguilera's "Your Body", the first single from the upcoming record, is already out. Green, for his part, is currently working with NBC on a new show.

The rumor comes just as speculation surrounding American Idol's revolving door ends: Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban will join Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey as judges.

What do you think? Should Usher and Shakira join The Voice?

Europe's second polar-orbiting weather satellite is aloft

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? The second Metop satellite was launched today (Sept. 17) from the Baikonur cosmodrome, in Kazakhstan, atop a Russian Soyuz launcher.

Metop-B will ensure the continuity of the weather and atmospheric monitoring service provided by its predecessor Metop-A, which has been circling the globe from pole to pole, 14 times a day, since 2006 and has now exceeded its design lifetime.

The Soyuz-Fregat vehicle lifted off at 16:28 GMT on Monday, Sept. 17. The Fregat upper stage manoeuvred to release the satellite into a polar orbit at an altitude of 810 km some 69 minutes later, over the Kerguelen Archipelago, in the Indian Ocean.

Metop-B, developed for EUMETSAT's polar satellite system, is now under the control of ESA's Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany.

In the coming days, its systems will be tested before it is handed over to EUMETSAT, also based in Darmstadt, for six months of commissioning of its payload before entering routine service with Metop-A.

For ESA's Director General Jean-Jacques Dordain: "The launch of this second Metop satellite has taken place about two and a half months after that of MSG-3; this is a perfect illustration of the vitality of Europe's weather satellite programmes developed in cooperation between ESA and EUMETSAT. The fact that the next generation satellites in line are already being prepared by ESA shows the strong commitment of Member States of both organisations to continue and improve collecting data that are supporting not only weather-forecasting but also monitoring and understanding of climate change. Such services are demonstrating daily the economical and societal value of investing in space infrastructure."

Volker Liebig, ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programmes, commented: "Metop-B will become operational while Metop-A is still active and performing well. This will ensure the continuity of the service without any risk of interruption in the data feed. Meanwhile, we are working with EUMETSAT to prepare the future with the second generation of European polar satellites."

Unlike the Meteosat satellites, which are watching about half of our planet from a fixed vantage point almost 36 000 km above the Gulf of Guinea, Metops work at lower altitude and fly over the whole globe to provide additional data on the atmosphere.

Beyond weather monitoring, the Metop and Meteosat satellites are part of ESA's effort on climate watch, which includes the experimental Earth Explorer satellites, to probe Earth and its atmosphere.

Three Earth Explorers have been launched since 2009 -- the GOCE gravity mapper, the SMOS water satellite and the CryoSat ice satellite -- and more are in preparation.

In 2013, ESA will start launching Sentinel satellites to monitor our environment and climate under the Global Monitoring for Environment & Security (GMES) initiative with the European Commission.

Wealth Freedom: The Master Key to Everything

When you have the need to be "perfect", you can create amazing life results, but it's likely you can't enjoy them because either you or your results are never quite perfect (by definition!). At the same time, you (like most of us humans) may have a need to survive and ?having to? survive requires the perpetual need to "live on the edge". There are two ways out of survival - death and abundance; both challenge that need to survive. This is a free clearing audio that can help you address both of these challenges: http://www.MasterKeyToEverything.com.

Semiconductors grown on graphene could fundamentally change semiconductor industry

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have patented and are commercializing GaAs nanowires grown on graphene, a hybrid material with competitive properties. Semiconductors grown on graphene are expected to become the basis for new types of device systems, and could fundamentally change the semiconductor industry. The technology underpinning their approach has recently been described in a publication in the American research journal Nano Letters.

The new patented hybrid material offers excellent optoelectronic properties, says Professor Helge Weman, a professor at NTNU's Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, and CTO and co-founder of the company created to commercialize the research, CrayoNano AS. "We have managed to combine low cost, transparency and flexibility in our new electrode," he adds.

The patented method of growing semiconductor nanowires on atomically thin graphene uses MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) to grow the nanowires.

"We do not see this as a new product," Weman says. "This is a template for a new production method for semiconductor devices. We expect solar cells and light emitting diodes to be first in line when future applications are planned."

Sunny outlook for nanowires

"Graphene is experiencing tremendous attention worldwide," Weman says. "Companies like IBM and Samsung are driving this development in the search for a replacement for silicon in electronics as well as for new applications, such as flexible touch screens for mobile phones. Well, they need not wait any more. Our invention fits perfectly with the production machinery they already have. We make it easy for them to upgrade consumer electronics to a level where design has no limits."

This invention is thus thought to be an enabler for a future platform for electronics and optoelectronics devices. One possible device with very large market potential is a nanowire solar cell. This type of solar cell has the potential to be efficient, cheap and flexible at the same time. The invention also makes it possible to imagine a future with self-powered nanomachines and advanced 3D integrated circuits built on graphene and semiconductor nanowires, enabling smaller and more efficient electronics.

Weman himself envisions flexible self-powered consumer electronics integrated into everything from clothes to notepads, and of course traditional cell phones, tablets and exercise accessories.

"Semiconductors grown on graphene could become the basis for new types of device systems, and could transform the semiconductor industry by introducing graphene as a preferred substrate for many applications," he says.

biomass larina: Retirement Planning: How do I coordinate investing ...

Tax Considerations

Retirement accounts can grow tax deferred until withdrawal. ?Consequently, this is a good place for frequently traded securities, or to rebalance your assets without tax consequences. ?This also means that you should defer withdrawing these funds until required allowing you to earn as much from the deferral of taxes as possible. ?The price that you pay for this benefit is that all preferentially taxed items lose their preferential tax characteristics in a retirement plan.

For example, long term capital gains and Qualified Dividends are both taxed at maximum rates of 15% (currently through 2010). ?When these gains occur in an IRA, they are not taxed in the year that they occur or are received like taxable accounts. ?However, years later when they are withdrawn they are treated as ordinary income and maybe taxed at a maximum federal rate of 35%. ?The other price that you pay for the benefit of tax deferral of holding investments in your IRA is that your losses are not deductible in the year of the loss and cannot be used to offset gains that you have in your taxable accounts. ?Instead they just reduce the amount available for withdrawal and hence the amount taxed.

Although it is difficult for even the most seasoned financial planner to determine the proper allocation between a client's taxable accounts and IRA accounts, one approach might look like the chart on the next page.

BASEBALL: Dodgers undergo a late transformation

By J.P. Hoornstra, Staff Writer

A funny thing happened on the way to September: Matt Kemp became the Dodgers' youngest position player.

Perhaps surprisingly, until Tim Federowicz (born August 1987) was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to become the team's third catcher as rosters expanded Sept. 1, Kemp (born September 1984) was younger than any non-pitcher on the active roster.

By itself, that doesn't mean much, especially since Kemp has been in the major leagues for six years. But it brought into sharp focus just how much the Dodgers' clubhouse has transformed this season - from an assortment of up-and-comers (Dee Gordon, Jerry Sands) and minor-league vagabonds (Elian Herrera, Justin Sellers) pressed into major-league duty, to a potent lineup led by several established stars.

Handling a new mix of personalities presents a new challenge for manager Don Mattingly besides filling out the lineup card, knowing when to pull the starting pitcher and winning games in the midst of a September playoff hunt.

"Everybody's individually different," Mattingly said. "A kid that's coming up for the first time or in a first year, you're having a lot of different conversations with that kid than you would with a guy that has six years under his belt and has been accomplished. They're definitely different conversations, but we're all on the same boat still. So we've all got to get on that page, that we're all headed for that one spot."

If there's a generalization to be made

about those "different conversations" they seem to be more simple and more frequent.

Only the outfielders were absent when players gathered for a meeting on the Dodger Stadium infield Aug.22, three days before Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto boarded a chartered plane bound for Los Angeles. What followed was a basic spring-training drill, with pitchers coming off the mound to field bunts, catchers telling them where to throw the ball and infielders shuffling to (hopefully) the right base.

Even though the whole team took part, Mattingly said the meeting and the drill were specifically staged for the four players who weren't Dodgers in spring training - pitchers Joe Blanton, Brandon League and Randy Choate, and infielder Hanley Ramirez. (Shane Victorino was excluded because he's an outfielder).

Mattingly held a pair of closed-door team meetings last week. The first came after an uninspired 2-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The message was nothing profound - "concentrate on the game, play hard" in the words of Juan Rivera.

The second was just among the eight new Dodgers, in which Mattingly addressed the urgency of entering September 4<MD+,%30,%55,%70>1/<MD-,%0,%55,%70>2 games out of first place in the division.

"It was a little odd when we first got Hanley and Shane and Brandon and Choatey. You get four new guys there," Mattingly said. "You lose some of these guys' best friends. (Josh) Lindblom leaves. ... Sending Tony Gwynn down, sending Bobby Abreu down, kind of been good fixtures and guys who have played with a lot of emotions, and good people.

"So you lose those guys, then you get new guys and all of a sudden there's another influx of three guys. It's like another adjustment period."

The Dodgers had a golden opportunity to catalyze the adjustment period when they won games in their final at-bat Sunday and Monday. On-field celebrations of walk-off hits, by definition, tend to bring a team together, but the positive vibes were squandered in losses to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The wins and losses say it's been a rocky transition. Credit Mattingly for at least keeping the lines of communication open and the new players for being receptive.

Mattingly, a lifetime .307 hitter and longtime batting coach, revealed he's already learned something new about hitting talking to Gonzalez.

"He made it as easy as possible, as far as communication, making me feel comfortable," Gonzalez added. "I knew that the guys loved playing for him. I knew that guys loved him as a hitting coach and during the transition to a manager it carried over."

Sony Xperia Tablet S gets the full teardown, shows its NVIDIA heart (video)

Sony Xperia Tablet S gets the full feat down,

So, you probably didn't even get the cellophane off your Xperia Tablet S yet (for those in the UK at least), but Sony has already beaten the likes of iFixit to the strip-down post. It's one of the firm's own engineers, Takuya Inaba, who takes a knife to the minty-fresh tablet -- revealing its NVIDIA innards for all to see. Of course, we could tell you all about how he opened up the tablet, removing 10 screws, and breaking the splash-proof internal seal, but we gather you'd probably rather see the deed for yourselves. Full gory video after the break, but just remember, don't try this at home or you might as well tear up that warranty, too.
