Syracuse football links: Chandler Jones says it was 'not an easy decision' to leave Orange

Syracuse's All-Big East defensive end Chandler Jones announced last week that he would leave SU and enter this spring's NFL Draft. Jones -- brother of former Syracuse star and current Baltimore Ravens player Arthur Jones and UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones -- had one year of eligibility remaining.

Jones talked to ESPN Big East blogger Andrea Adelson about his decision to turn pro. Jones said that injuries his brother Art suffered during his senior season at Syracuse, which likely caused Art's draft stock to fall, had an effect on his decision.

Here is an excerpt:

"Being a 21-year-old making a decision to change my whole life was huge for me," Jones said in a phone interview. "I had a lot of different yeses and nos from a lot of different people. I love Syracuse University, and I can tell you this was definitely not an easy decision."

He said there was a feeling that he was letting the team down because the Orange were not as successful as he wanted them to be this past season. But he also felt it was important to embark on a new chapter in his career, and to take full advantage of a season that also saw him get first-team Big East honors despite missing five games with a knee injury.

So Jones is now set up in Pensacola, Fla., working with Athletes Performance Inc. to help him prepare for the draft. He is expecting an invitation to the NFL combine in February, but will not get official word until after the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft passes this Sunday.

Indy writer on Delone Carter's rookie season:

Indianapolis Star writer Phillip B. Wilson recently broke down the disastrous season of the Indianapolis Colts. Among his many observations was this take on the season of Colts' rookie running back Delone Carter, a former member of the Syracuse Orange:

I didn?t care for the benching of rookie RB Delone Carter, either. Yes, he lost two fumbles before taking a seat. No, fumbling wasn?t in his history. But benching him put fumbling more into his mind. And, of course, when he got a shot later he lost another fumble. The guy was running well. We haven?t seen that kind of power running since Edgerrin James. The only reason the Colts scored in the 62-7 Saints debacle was because Carter showed rare determination, especially on the long run when it seemed tacklers had him a couple of times. With all the mistakes made on this team this year, messages needed to be sent to a rookie who was playing well but lost two fumbles trying to get extra yards? Again, not a smart move. Carter is a tough-minded guy. He?ll get past this. He got the message. But something tells me he knew fumbling was bad before the message was sent.
